Preparing for Your Home Studio Pet Photoshoot
Setting the Stage
Think of the pre-shoot phone consultation as my "getting to know you" (and your pet) session. This is the perfect time to chat with me about your creative vision, any specific shots you're dreaming of, and your pet’s unique temperament. Whether they are a high-energy zoomer or a bit of a shy soul, the more I understand their personality beforehand, the better I can prepare to capture those perfect, authentic moments.
Always a Favourite
I always bring my tricks of the trade however, to help your pet feel right at home in your home studio, I encourage you to organise prior to their shoot, their favourite toys, high-value treats, and any other favourite items they love to have with them. A familiar blanket or beloved squeaky toy can work wonders in easing anxiety and making the session a fun, rewarding experience.
Look sharp Pre-Shoot Grooming
Ensure your pet is looking their absolute best before your session. A clean, well-groomed pet not only looks stunning on camera but feels more comfortable, too. I highly recommend scheduling a bath or professional grooming session a few days prior to your shoot. this helps make them look great but not to freshly cut.
The "Pre-Shoot Burn" (Exercise)
A pet with pent-up energy can be a bit of a whirlwind in a small studio space. If you have a high-energy dog, try to fit in a long walk or a vigorous play session about an hour before the shoot. You want them to be "relaxed-tired," not "exhausted-sleeping-on-the-floor-tired."
Manage the Menu (Hunger Levels)
Keep them a little bit hungry. If your pet just ate a huge bowl of kibble, they might not be motivated by treats during the shoot.
The "Good Stuff"
Prepare "high-value" treats—things they don't get every day, like small pieces of chicken, cheese, or specialised liver treats. (I will aways bring these just in case) These are perfect for getting that "perked-up ear" look.
Practice Your Cues
In the week leading up to the session, do a few quick "refreshers" on basic commands like Sit, Stay, and Down. If your pet is used to responding to these in different environments, they’ll be much more likely to listen when the studio lights are on them.
Consider the "Wardrobe"
Clean the Hardware. If your pet is wearing a collar or harness in the photos, give it a quick scrub or choose a fresh, decorative one.
The "Naked" Look. Many owners prefer the natural look. If you plan on taking the collar off, do it 15–20 minutes before the shoot to allow any "collar fur" or skin indentations to smooth out.
Human Coordination
If you and the rest of the family plan on being in a the shots, aim for neutral colours that won't clash with your pet’s coat, each other or the studio backdrops. Ask dad to resist wearing his favourite Hawaiian shirt if everyone else is in neutral tones.
Up Early for a "Sniff About"
New environments even at home, can be overwhelming. Plan for "break" a few minutes early so your pet can have a quick bathroom break and a chance to sniff the perimeter of the studio. Letting them satisfy their curiosity early helps them settle down much faster once the camera comes out.
Keep Your Own "Zen"
Pets are incredibly intuitive—they pick up on your energy. If you’re stressed or anxious about them "behaving," they will feel it. Stay calm, patient, and positive. I'm super patient and a pro at handling all kinds of temperaments, so just relax and let the magic happen.
